NUI Maynooth Ranked Third in World Overall and First in Ireland Overall in Major Survey of International Students

National University of Ireland Maynooth has achieved the highest ranking among Ireland’s universities in a major survey of international students.  It has also been ranked third in the world in the same survey.  The International Student Barometer (ISB) conducted by i-Graduate in autumn 2011 involved over 209,000 international students from 238 universities in 16 countries.  



Excellence in Teaching and Learning
International students ranked NUI Maynooth first overall in Ireland and seventh globally for Teaching and Learning.  It obtained the highest score among the seven Irish universities in 15 of 22 questions related to teaching and learning experience.  Of particular note is the first place ranking for the expertise of the academic staff, the quality of their teaching and of the facilities for teaching and learning at NUI Maynooth and the range of excellent learning and language supports available to students.  In addition, the University was ranked first globally for diversity of Topic Selection and Opportunities to Teach at postgraduate level.

Excellence in Student Experience
NUI Maynooth also excelled in the other categories surveyed, which included Arrival and Support Services and Living experience.  For Arrival and Support Services, NUI Maynooth obtained rankings in the top ten global positions for quality of the campus medical centre, social facilities, and the University’s clubs and societies, opportunities to meet academic and support staff during orientation, the host culture, and the ability for international students to integrate and make friends from the host country.

It was ranked first in Ireland in terms of Orientation as a University, its orientation to the Local Area, the Opportunities to Meet Academic and Support Staff, Internet Access, Medical Center, Student Advisory Service, its Finance Department and Catering service.

Students were also very satisfied with the Living experience on campus at NUI Maynooth, resulting in top ten global rankings for the Host Culture, ability to integrate and make Friends from the Host Country, and Social Facilities on campus.

It ranked first overall out of the seven Irish universities and third globally for propensity for international students to recommend the university to their peers. Over 90% of international students studying at NUI Maynooth would encourage their peers to study there, compared to the national average of 85%.

Deputy President and Vice President for Innovation, Professor James Walsh welcomed the result, saying “We are delighted to have received the third place ranking in the world and first place overall in Ireland in this global survey of international students. We are particularly pleased with the student's assessment of teaching and learning at NUI Maynooth.  It is further evidence of the growing international reputation of the University for excellence in academic teaching and learning combined with a supportive and collegiate environment for students on campus.”

NUI Maynooth’s success in achieving the highest ranking in the ISB (International Student Barometer) follows recent successes including achieving the top ranking of Irish Universities in the Times Higher Education Best New Universities World Rankings, and confirmation that the University will maintain its unique status as the first and only international university outside North America to be included in the Princeton Review’s Best Colleges guidebook in 2013.

About the International Student Barometer Survey
The results are based on an online survey carried out in the academic year 2011/2012 with over 209,000 international students responding from 238 institutions in 16 countries, including 5,408 international students studying at the 7 Irish Universities. National University of Ireland Maynooth registered the highest response rate in Ireland at 43%, compared to the global average of 34%. The results are particularly meaningful as they are based on the actual opinions of International students studying at Irish Universities.

The International Student Barometer (ISB) was undertaken by independent research group i-Graduate and is the largest independent annual study of international students in the world, tracking and reporting international student feedback.  The ISB tracks decision-making, perceptions, expectations and experiences of international students studying at third level institutions.  i-Graduate are partners with 1,300 of the world’s leading universities, colleges and schools, plus governments and government agencies, across 24 countries.
